How to Choose the Right Timber for Your Deck
How to Choose the Right Timber for Your Deck
Your Decking Material Matters
Choosing the right timber is one of the most important decisions when planning a new deck. Different species offer different colours, textures, hardness, durability, maintenance requirements and price points.
For a residential deck, pool area, lodge, entertainment space or commercial project, the best choice depends on how the deck will be used and the environment in which it will be installed.
At Creator Creations Wooden Decking, we work with a range of decking materials for projects in Nelspruit, White River, Mpumalanga and the wider Lowveld.
From affordable treated Pine to premium hardwoods and innovative bamboo decking, we can discuss the available options for your project.
Treated Pine Decking
Affordable and Practical
Treated Pine is one of the more affordable timber options for decking and remains a practical choice for clients working within a defined budget.
Pine is a softwood, so it does not have the same natural hardness as many of the hardwood decking species. However, appropriately treated Pine can be used successfully for exterior decking applications.
The South African Wood Preservers Association identifies H3 treated timber for exterior above-ground applications, including decking, stairs and balustrades.
Pine can be a good option when affordability, availability and a natural timber appearance are important considerations.
Best suited to:
Residential decks, patios, entertainment areas and projects where budget is an important factor.
Meranti Decking
A Versatile Timber With a Natural Appearance
Meranti is widely used in South Africa and is valued for its attractive colour, workability and availability. It ranges from lighter pinkish tones through to deeper reddish-brown colours, depending on the species and timber selection.
Meranti does have a reputation for rotting when used outdoors, particularly where the timber is exposed to persistent moisture or is not properly maintained. This is an important consideration when selecting it for decking.
However, that reputation does not mean Meranti cannot be a durable decking choice. Good-quality Meranti, correctly selected, installed and maintained for the application, can provide a durable outdoor timber solution.
Its natural appearance and versatility make it an option worth considering where the design and site conditions are appropriate.
Best suited to:
Decks where natural appearance, versatility and a moderate price point are important considerations.
Balau Decking
A Popular Hardwood Decking Option
Balau is a dense hardwood that has been widely used for outdoor decking and balustrades in South Africa.
It generally has a rich brown to reddish-brown appearance and can weather to a silver-grey colour when left untreated.
Balau is known for its hardness and durability, although the quality and performance of timber can vary depending on the source, grade, environment and maintenance. Industry guidance also notes that the quality of Balau available on the market can vary.
Best suited to:
Residential and commercial decks where a durable hardwood with a rich natural appearance is preferred.
Garapa Decking
Golden Tones and Hardwood Durability
Garapa is a South American hardwood recognised for its golden yellow to light brown colour, relatively fine texture and straight to slightly interlocked grain.
It is a popular decking timber because it combines a premium natural appearance with durability and relatively good workability for a hardwood.
Like many natural timbers, Garapa changes colour when exposed to the elements. It can gradually weather towards a silver-grey appearance if left untreated.
If you prefer to retain the warmer golden colour, an appropriate exterior finish and maintenance programme can help preserve the appearance.
Best suited to:
Premium residential decks, pool areas, entertainment spaces and lodge projects.
Rhodesian Teak Decking
A Distinctive and Durable Timber
Rhodesian Teak, also known as Zimbabwean Teak, is a sought-after timber with a distinctive appearance.
It has a rich reddish-brown colour with darker streaking and a characteristic grain. It is also known for excellent wear resistance and durability, making it suitable for decking and other high-traffic applications.
Rhodesian Teak can be particularly appealing when the natural character of the timber is an important part of the finished design.
It is, however, less readily available than some other decking timbers, so availability and project requirements should be considered when specifying it.
Best suited to:
Premium decks, high-traffic areas, lodge projects and clients looking for a distinctive natural timber.
MOSO Bamboo X-treme® Decking
A Modern Alternative to Traditional Timber
MOSO Bamboo X-treme® offers a different approach to outdoor decking.
Rather than conventional timber, it is made from Moso bamboo that undergoes MOSO’s Thermo-Density® process, involving heat treatment and high-density compression. MOSO describes the resulting product as a stable, durable outdoor decking material with a hardwood-like appearance.
The standard X-treme appearance is a dark brown colour when installed. Over time, natural weathering can turn it grey unless the colour is maintained with an appropriate exterior finish.
MOSO currently also offers the Elegance option, which provides a pre-greyed appearance from installation.
Best suited to:
Contemporary homes, premium outdoor spaces, pool areas, lodges and projects looking for a modern alternative to conventional hardwood decking.

MOSO Bamboo N-durance® Decking
Warm Caramel Colour
MOSO’s second outdoor bamboo decking range is Bamboo N-durance®.
N-durance uses MOSO’s Outdoor-Density® process, combining crushing, steam-pressure treatment, compression and a specialised finish. The result is a decking product with a warm caramel colour and a natural hardwood-like appearance.
MOSO states that annual maintenance with its recommended exterior oil is required to maintain the warm caramel appearance and resistance to surface fungi.
This makes N-durance an interesting option when you want the appearance of warm natural timber without choosing a conventional hardwood.
Best suited to:
Contemporary outdoor spaces, pool areas, hospitality projects and clients looking for a warm caramel-toned decking finish.

What Should You Consider Before Choosing?
Budget
Pine can offer a more accessible starting point, while premium hardwoods and specialised bamboo products generally involve a higher material investment.
Appearance
Consider whether you prefer pale timber, golden tones, reddish-brown hardwood or the darker and caramel options available from MOSO.
Exposure
A covered veranda has different exposure from an open pool deck or fully exposed outdoor entertainment area.
Foot Traffic
A private residential deck may have very different demands from a busy lodge walkway or commercial entertainment area.
Maintenance
All outdoor decking needs appropriate care. The amount and type of maintenance will depend on the material, finish, exposure and use.
Availability
Some premium or less commonly stocked timbers may have more limited availability. We can advise on options available for your project.

For safari lodges, game lodges and hospitality properties, timber selection becomes even more important.
Large decking projects can include guest verandas, pool decks, walkways, viewing platforms and entertainment areas, each with different requirements.
