Pool Decking Ideas for Lowveld Homes and Outdoor Spaces

Turn Your Pool Area Into an Outdoor Living Space

A swimming pool can be the centre of an outdoor entertainment area, but the space around the pool is just as important.

A well-designed timber pool deck can create space for relaxing, entertaining, dining and moving between the pool and the rest of the garden.

At Creator Creations Wooden Decking, we design and install custom pool decking in Nelspruit, White River, Mpumalanga and the wider Lowveld.

Why Choose Timber Around a Pool?

Timber can bring warmth and natural character to a pool area.

Instead of treating the pool as an isolated feature, decking can connect it with:

• Patios
• Gardens
• Entertainment areas
• Outdoor dining
• Pool houses
• Guest accommodation
• Existing decks

A custom design can also incorporate steps and different levels where appropriate.

Pool Deck Designs to Consider

Full Pool Surround

A timber deck can extend around a significant portion of the swimming pool, creating a dedicated outdoor entertainment area.

Partial Pool Deck

If your garden already has paving or another surface, decking can be used selectively to create a seating or relaxation area.

Raised Pool Deck

Where the property has a change in level, a raised deck can create a transition between the pool and surrounding areas.

Pool Deck With Steps

Steps can be incorporated into the design to connect the deck with the garden or lower areas.

Pool Deck With Balustrades

Where the design includes raised sections or steps, balustrades may form part of the overall solution.

Designing a Pool Deck for the Lowveld

Outdoor spaces in the Lowveld need to be planned around their environment.

The design should consider:

• Sun exposure
• Rain and drainage
• Pool water
• Existing landscaping
• Ground levels
• Access
• Furniture placement
• Maintenance requirements

Material selection is also important.

The South African Wood Preservers Association provides guidance on treated timber and identifies exterior above-ground decking among H3 applications.

Timber Options for Pool Decking

Creator Creations works with several decking materials, depending on the project requirements.

Treated Pine

A practical option for a range of outdoor decking applications.

Meranti

A versatile timber option with a warm natural appearance.

Yellow Balau

A hardwood option that can suit premium outdoor projects where its characteristics meet the requirements.

Moso Bamboo X-treme

A further option for outdoor decking. The manufacturer describes it as a thermally treated and compressed bamboo product intended for outdoor applications including decking.

Pool Decking and Outdoor Entertainment

The best pool decks aren’t simply designed around the pool.

They are designed around how people use the space.

Think about where you want:

• Loungers
• Outdoor furniture
• Dining
• Shade
• Steps
• Access points
• Plants and landscaping
• Entertainment areas

This approach can turn a pool deck into a genuine outdoor living area.
